Musical firsts…

I know I haven’t been posting often but I thought it would be nice to have a bit of fun and share something that demonstrates my love of music…

For me at least music has always been the ‘friend’ you turn to when no-one else is around to share your joy, or pain, I’m sure many of you can relate to that sentiment?

Music can feed and inspire, offer comfort or relief, an opportunity to let go, express yourself, dance, sing and just connect or disconnect from the world as you choose. The right track at the right time can mean so much. Music was my first love, and it will be my last… 😉

So, I came up with a little list of 20 musical ‘firsts’ to give you a taste of the musical influences that have spread through my life…

1. What was the first song you loved?

School’s Out by Alice Cooper, even though it was released before I was born. My Mom tells me it was probably the first song I sang as a toddler, closely followed by Pink Floyd’s – Another brick in the Wall.

2. Who was the first Person who introduced you to loving music? 

I think that would have to be my Dad, as my early musical tastes were quite Rock influenced and it was my Dad who liked that type of music. I would curl up next to him on the sofa with his massive headphones swamping my tiny head listening to his vinyl collection. What a great memory 🙂

3. What was the first single you bought?

That would be ‘I think we’re alone now’ by Tiffany in 1987 when I was 11, my first vinyl single…

4. What was the first instrument you played?

Haha, the Recorder, I think it was probably the first instrument most little kids learnt in primary school when I was young! We had recorder group at lunch time. I think I could still play ‘3 blind mice’ even now!

5. Who was your first favourite band?

That easily has to be Wham, they were the first band I became a fan of completely just because I liked their music myself and not enjoying my dad’s music collection. I didn’t get to buy any of their music at the time though 😦

6. What was the first album you bought?

I had to think about this for a while, I’m not sure of the number but it was a ‘NOW’ album on cassette, I think the first one I got was the one with ‘Gett Off’ by Prince on it…  I did love that song! …okay so I just googled it and it was ‘Now 20’ but I cant be sure if I had bought any before that one…? In fact I think this album influenced my teen hormones a lot as there were a fair few ‘sex’ related tracks… hmmm lol

7. Who was the object of your first crush on a singer/band member?

Jordan Knight of NKOTB Mmmm ohh I was sooo in love with him, posters on my bedroom wall and ceiling covering every inch of my room. I never got to see the band as a kid, but when they reformed a few years ago I finally got the chance to go, it was great as they did a full set of old favourites as well as their new stuff so I felt like a teenager all over again!

8. What was the first song that made you think it was about ‘you’ or  ‘your life’?

Ohh gosh, there have been so many, I’m not sure probably something like ‘Girl’s just wanna have fun’ by Cyndi Lauper. I still often think of songs as they could’ve been written just for me even now.

9. What was the first gig you went to?

Hmmm that would have been a gig put on by a local radio station BRMB, they had a number of UK acts there, not the biggest stars but they did get in the charts… I just can’t remember a single act that was on stage though lol it was that memorable!

10. What was the first TV/Film soundtrack you bought? 

The Lost Boys soundtrack, my favourite film of all time 😀 I love all the tracks on the album but I think my favourite of all has to be ‘People are Strange’ a cover of the Doors original by Echo and the Bunnymen

11. What was the first song that made you enjoy a musical genre you normally didn’t like?

I’ve always enjoyed music from a range of genre’s, I think Opera is probably one of the few styles I don’t enjoy. I don’t listen to much classical or ‘easy listening’ stuff either but the first song that made me enjoy a genre I didn’t like. I don’t know, I guess it would probably be a classical piece that was played in an unexpected setting, that actually made me appreciate the genre for once, but I can’t name a specific piece…

12. What was the first song you hated?

Another tough one, although maybe not so much actually lol. Even though I like a lot of her music when Umbrella was a big hit for Rihanna I couldn’t stand it and called it ‘Chav-a-rella’ it was the ‘Chav’ anthem of the year to me and you couldn’t get away from it, it was being played constantly… urgghhh

13. Which was your first music festival?

2009 V-Festival, I’m glad I’ve had chance to go to one and it was a really good one, I was lucky to have good weather and lot’s of musicians I like were there. But, camping is not really for me so I don’t think I could ever become a regular festival go-er!

14. What is the first song you play to get over a break up?

Haha, I think I tend to go more for wallowing in memories first, playing things like Lady Antebellum – Need you now, instead of get over it songs lol But probably when I get to the ‘I don’t want/need/love/like you anymore’ point things like TLC -No scrubs tend to feature high on my playlist haha

15. What was the first song that inspired you to change something about yourself?

Easy, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip – Magicians Assistant. This made me think about my self-harm differently for the first time ever and bought home the realisation about just how much it affected others, no matter how many time people tell you these things sometimes it’s not about what is said but how it’s put across and the words here just got that message to a part of my subconscious that hadn’t been reached before, and made me want to stop…

16. Your first ‘Our song’…

Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen from Dirty Dancing. My first ‘real’ boyfriend introduced me to the film (which I loved) and also sang this to me, awww sweet hehe 🙂

17. What was the first band merchandise you bought?

I never did that whole buying a t-shirt with your favourite band on or anything like that, other than the actual music and when I was younger posters, I don’t think I’ve bought band merchandise. I bought a t-shirt at V-Festival with ‘V-Festival’ on it, does that count?

18. What was the first song you made up a dance to?

I used to do this a lot, either with my friends or with the ‘big girls’ (neighbours, older sisters of friends or the girl’s at summer playscheme) I think the earliest one I remember was Fame – Irene Cara… there was lot’s a leaping around, I think we all wanted to be ‘The kid’s from Fame’ lol

19. When was the first time you heard something that changed the way you thought about music, what did you hear? 

I think for me it was probably the first time I watched Eurovision and really enjoyed lot’s of the music from other European Countries. Of course the UK song was atrocious as they so are and I guess it made me realise just how much ‘crap’ we churn out when there is so much great music out there, sometimes I don’t even think you can call some of the stuff that get’s out ‘music’ it’s just noise, very bad noise at that!

20. What was the first song you ever sang at Karaoke?

I can’t remember when I first did Karaoke, probably at one of my Husband’s, mate’s, parties they always had… it was probably something cheesy and typical Karaoke crap like ‘I will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor, lol.  But my favourite song to sing at Karaoke has to be Luka – Suzanne Vega
